The Austin Police Department (APD) has issued safety guidelines for Halloween, emphasizing the importance of supervision and safety for children during trick-or-treating activities. The department highlights the need for ensuring homes are safe and accessible to visiting trick-or-treaters.

In preparation for Halloween celebrations on Sixth Street, APD announced that due to anticipated large crowds on Thursday, October 31, 2024, vehicular traffic will be restricted from Brazos to Red River streets. Additionally, cross streets between Fifth and Seventh streets will also be closed. These closures are expected to be in place by 8 p.m., with towing of vehicles starting at 6 p.m. Vehicles parked on Sixth Street and its cross streets, including Brazos, San Jacinto, Trinity, Neches, Red River, and Sabine streets, will be subject to towing.

Vehicle owners can locate their towed vehicles through Auto Return’s website using their license plate or Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Furthermore, certain IH-35 exit ramps may face closure based on the volume of vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the area. These measures aim to ensure pedestrian safety during the festivities.

APD advises community members attending events on Sixth Street to remain vigilant against drink spiking. Symptoms of consuming a spiked drink typically appear within 10 to 30 minutes. The department also reminds everyone not to drink and drive and suggests planning a safe mode of transportation for traveling to and from Halloween events. A NO REFUSAL initiative will be conducted by APD as part of these efforts.
