The Austin Youth Climate Equity Council has welcomed 35 new members, marking its fourth year of operation. The council aims to empower young leaders by providing them with resources and connections to influence climate action and community resilience. The council's mission is facilitated by EcoRise, a local nonprofit organization.
Clara, a junior at McCallum High School and newly appointed member of the Youth Council, expressed her enthusiasm for joining the program. "My generation needs leaders to tackle climate change. I want to be a part of this program so I can train to be a well-informed and effective leader," she said.
Throughout the school year, council members will engage in learning about sustainability, civic procedures, and environmental justice. They will utilize Austin's Climate Equity Plan as a framework to support local community organizations and continue previous council cohorts' work.
Zach Baumer, the City of Austin’s Chief Sustainability Officer, emphasized the importance of youth involvement in climate advocacy. “Today’s youth are powerful advocates for a sustainable future,” he stated. Brittany Jayroe from EcoRise added that these young individuals would play an essential role in shaping solutions for climate challenges.
The initiative is led by EcoRise in partnership with the City of Austin's Office of Sustainability. Community organizations interested in mentoring can contact YouthPrograms@EcoRise.org.
