Shooting on Rutland Drive leads to Austin's 62nd homicide of 2024

Austin Police Department officers responded to a shooting incident in the early hours of Saturday, November 16, 2024, on Rutland Drive. Upon arrival at the scene around 4:07 a.m., they discovered an unidentified white female victim inside an apartment with a gunshot wound. Despite efforts by Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services to save her life, she was pronounced dead at 4:37 a.m.

The suspect, Noah Mata, a 36-year-old Hispanic male, was detained from the neighboring apartment where the shot originated. According to police investigations, Mata attempted to take a gun from another male present in the apartment when it discharged, resulting in the fatal shooting of the woman next door.

Mata has been charged with first-degree aggravated robbery and is currently held in Travis County jail. The investigation into this incident continues as it marks Austin's 62nd homicide for the year 2024.

Authorities urge anyone with information related to this case to contact the Austin Police Department at 512-974-TIPS. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program online or by calling 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 may be offered for information leading to an arrest.
