On August 27, 2024, at approximately 1:04 a.m., a fatal crash occurred in the 700 block of East Ben White Boulevard SVRD WB. The incident involved a vehicle and a pedestrian near Murphy's gas station. The pedestrian, identified as Michael Schoenherr, was pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle involved did not stop and left immediately after the crash.
The Austin Police Department (APD) is seeking public assistance to identify the suspect vehicle connected to this incident. "APD's Vehicular Homicide Unit is requesting the public's assistance in identifying a suspect vehicle," stated APD representatives.
This marks Austin’s 58th fatal crash of 2024, with total fatalities reaching 63 for the year. By comparison, on this date in 2023, there were 63 fatal crashes resulting in 66 deaths.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact APD's Vehicular Homicide unit at 512-974-8111 or anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program by visiting austincrimestoppers.org or calling 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 may be available for information leading to an arrest.
The investigation remains ongoing as officials continue their assessment of this tragic event.
