Starting January 8, 2025, travelers from visa-exempt countries visiting the United Kingdom will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before entering. This requirement includes visitors from the United States who are traveling for tourism, business, or short-term studies.

The ETA is an online travel authorization designed to enhance border security by providing more efficient processing and pre-screening of travelers before they arrive at U.K. borders. It is electronically linked to the traveler's passport and remains valid for up to two years or until the passport expires.

All travelers from visa-exempt countries such as the U.S., Canada, and Australia must apply for an ETA. "Children of all ages, including infants, require their own ETA if they are nationals of a country where ETAs apply," according to official guidance.

To ensure a smooth travel experience in 2025, it is crucial for travelers to apply in advance. The application process is described as quick and easy. If planning multiple trips within the validity period of the ETA, reapplication is not necessary until expiration.

It is important to note that an ETA differs from a visa in several key aspects. Travelers can check their eligibility on the official U.K. government website if uncertain about needing an ETA.
