Half Moon Empanadas has officially opened at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), marking the first sit-down hot food concession on the non-secure side of the terminal since COVID-19. The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on January 29, 2025, celebrating a new partnership between Half Moon Empanadas and AUS.

AUS CEO Ghizlane Badawi expressed enthusiasm about this addition, stating, “After years of adapting to pandemic-related challenges and navigating construction projects, we’re thrilled to offer an inviting, convenient space where travelers can enjoy a fresh, hot meal before heading through security.” She emphasized that Half Moon Empanadas aligns with AUS's commitment to quality and service.

Terry Mallum, Delaware North's Regional Manager, also shared positive sentiments: “Half Moon Empanadas is a great option for our meeters and greeters who are picking up friends, family, and colleagues arriving at AUS.”

Since its founding in 2008 by President Daniella Larez, Half Moon Empanadas has grown to 24 locations nationwide. Larez aims to make empanadas a beloved American food under the motto “Fuel Life’s Journeys.” The company plans further expansion with 14 locations in major airports.

The menu includes savory options like spicy chicken and classic beef empanadas as well as sweet treats such as guava & cream cheese and Nutella empanadas. Travelers can find these offerings at Checkpoint 2 West from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
