Austin police seek help identifying suspect in attempted sexual assault case

The Austin Police Department's Sex Crimes Unit is seeking public assistance in identifying a person of interest in an attempted sexual assault case. The incident occurred on Monday, August 26, 2024, at approximately 12:30 a.m. near the intersection of Payton Gin Road and North Lamar Boulevard.

According to the police report, the victim was walking along Payton Gin Road when approached by an unknown suspect who tried to engage her in conversation. When she continued walking, the suspect allegedly caught up with her, grabbed her from behind, threw her to the ground, and attempted a sexual assault.

Detectives have been unable to identify the person of interest through other means and are now turning to the community for help.

The individual is described as a Hispanic male (Honduran), approximately 5'7" tall with a heavy build weighing between 130-140 pounds. He has a dark complexion and medium-length curly black hair. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a green shirt with "PARTICIPANT" written on the back and light brown cargo shorts.

Anyone with information about this individual is urged to contact APD's Sex Crimes Unit at 512-974-5095. Tips can also be submitted anonymously via the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program at austincrimestoppers.org or by calling 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 may be available for information leading to an arrest.
