Austin police investigate fatal crash involving intoxicated driver

On the evening of March 22, 2025, Austin Police Department officers responded to a fatal crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian on the 8700 block of Menchaca Road. The pedestrian, an unidentified male, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver involved in the incident has been identified as Anissa Neicole Zapata, a 21-year-old Hispanic female. She was arrested on charges of Accident Involving Death and Driving While Intoxicated.

The incident marks Austin's 20th fatal crash in 2025, resulting in a total of 24 fatalities so far this year. Comparatively, on the same date last year, there were 19 fatal crashes with an equal number of deaths. The investigation into this recent crash is ongoing.

Authorities have stated that these details are based on their initial assessment and may be subject to change as the investigation progresses.
