Since its inception in 1981, National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW) has urged the nation to dismantle obstacles to justice for all victims of crime. This year, NCVRW will be commemorated from April 6 to 12 under the theme: "Connecting < KINSHIP > Healing."

The theme underscores the significance of human connection in bolstering support for survivors. By nurturing bonds, communities can enhance access to services, rights, and healing, which marks the starting point of advocacy.

In line with this focus, the Austin Police Department's (APD) Victim Services Unit is placing emphasis on secure communication for victims and survivors. For those fleeing domestic violence or human trafficking, an untraceable phone can be vital.

Since 2020, APD has joined forces with the 911 Cell Phone Bank to provide these devices to those who need them. In alignment with National Crime Victims' Rights Week, the 911 Cell Phone Bank and APD are starting a Phone Collection Drive. This drive, while beginning in April, aims to sustain efforts throughout the year and motivate ongoing community involvement.

"We've seen firsthand how a simple phone can be a lifeline for someone escaping a dangerous situation," said Melissa Nachbaur, one of the Supervisors for the Austin Police Department Victim Services Unit. "By donating a device you no longer use, you could be giving someone the chance to reach safety, find resources, or rebuild their life."

Donation drop-off boxes will be set up at all the Austin Police Department substations. Community members are encouraged to donate unused cell phones, tablets, and other electronic devices. These items will be cleaned of data, refurbished, and distributed to those in need via the 911 Cell Phone Bank program.

For additional information about the collection drive or the 911 Cell Phone Bank program, interested parties can visit www.911CellPhoneBank.org, call 866-290-7864, or contact the Austin Police Department Victim Services Unit at 512-974-5037.
