April Pool's Day, observed every April 1, acts as a yearly reminder to emphasize water safety and prevent drowning incidents. This observance underlines the significance of being proficient in swimming and the necessity of choosing lifeguarded pools for swimming activities.

Taking swimming lessons or joining a swim team can significantly lower the chances of drowning by teaching vital water safety skills, boosting confidence, and enhancing swimming capabilities. "April Pool’s Day is a fun yet meaningful way to remind everyone about the importance of water safety when we're in or around the water," said Jesús Aguirre, Austin Parks and Recreation Director. "Swimming in a lifeguarded pool helps ensure safety and reduces drowning risks. Swim lessons and joining a swim team equip swimmers with the skills to be safe, confident, and to enjoy the water responsibly."

Swim lessons are available with open registration for individuals of all skill levels. Instructional programs cater to various age groups, from infants as young as six months to adults.

Additionally, the recreational swim team program promotes good sportsmanship, team spirit, and lifelong fitness, with the aim of enhancing swimmers' self-esteem through improved physical and mental conditioning.

Lifeguard opportunities are currently available with the Aquatic Division, offering positions starting at $21.63 per hour. Eligible candidates must be at least 15 years old, and individuals from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply for these roles.
