Following the Austin City Council's decision to approve new economic development initiatives in September 2024, the City of Austin Economic Development Department will begin a series of public workshops in April. These sessions aim to enhance understanding and awareness of two programs: the Business Expansion Program, which has been updated, and the newly introduced Place-Based Enhancement Program.
These initiatives are designed to aid local business growth, safeguard cultural spaces, and foster inclusive community development. Residents, business owners, and stakeholders are invited to participate in the workshops to learn how these programs can contribute to sustaining and developing their businesses and neighborhoods.
"Austin is home to incredible talent, creativity, and entrepreneurship," said Anthony Segura, Interim Director of the Economic Development Department. "These programs give our local businesses and cultural spaces the support they need to grow, thrive, and stay rooted in the communities they serve. It’s about building momentum for Austin’s future—one neighborhood, one business at a time."
To facilitate community engagement, the City will offer free workshops throughout April at several Austin locations, including a virtual option. Community members are encouraged to register via Eventbrite.
These efforts align with the Economic Development Department's mission to promote inclusive economic opportunities in Austin. The department's Global Business Expansion Division focuses on attracting new investments, assisting existing businesses to grow, and creating jobs throughout the city. Collectively, these initiatives aim to keep Austin a competitive business destination while preserving its cultural identity and supporting community-centered economic development.
