WASHINGTON – This week, U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) voted in favor of the Save Our Gas Stoves Act and the Gas Stove Protection and Freedom Act, to prohibit the Biden administration from banning gas cooking appliances, which would increase Americans’ electricity bills and limit consumer choice.
“Natural gas stoves are used by nearly 40% of American households due to their reliability and affordability. Yet President Biden and the extreme left continue prioritizing their radical energy policies without accounting for the added burdens this will bring to Americans,” said Rep. McCaul. “House Republicans and I won’t stand for this administration's continued overreach and desired control over which cooktop appliances Americans use within the walls of their own home.”
Background:
President Biden’s Department of Energy recently proposed a rule that would severely limit production of gas stoves, forcing Americans to switch to more expensive alternatives. McCaul voted in favor of the following protections to keep the administration from imposing such far-reaching policies.
- H.R.1615, the Gas Stove Protection and Freedom Act, which would prohibit federal funds to be used toward banning gas stoves; and
- H.R.1640, the Save Our Gas Stoves Act, which would prevent the Department of Energy from broadly banning gas stoves or imposing any standard that would make them unavailable.
McCaul also signed a letter to President Biden in January, urging his administration to cease all efforts to ban or limit natural gas stoves.
