On December 5, 2023, a tragic incident unfolded in the 5300 block of Austral Loop, leading to the death of two individuals and the arrest of a suspect. The Austin Police Department (APD) responded to a burglary in progress after the homeowner reported a motion activation alert from his security camera.

Upon arrival at the scene, APD officers encountered a male individual forcefully kicking in the back door of the residence. The man was later identified as Shane James. A confrontation between James and an APD officer resulted in an exchange of gunfire, leaving the officer injured. James managed to escape the scene in a stolen vehicle but was apprehended shortly after a collision at the intersection of FM 1826 and SH 45.

Inside the residence, authorities discovered two deceased individuals, identified as Katherine Short and Lauren Short, both of whom had sustained gunshot wounds. The APD's Homicide unit and crime scene specialists were called in to investigate the incident. Through their diligent work, it was determined that James had entered the residence and committed the murders of Katherine and Lauren Short.

The APD has charged James with capital murder. Detective [name] stated, "Based on our investigation, we believe that Shane James is responsible for the deaths of Katherine and Lauren Short. We will continue to gather evidence and work towards ensuring justice is served."
