On January 1, 2024, a tragic incident occurred in the 4900 block of Oltorf Street in Austin, Texas, resulting in the loss of a young woman's life. Naomi Davis, a 19-year-old white woman, was fatally shot by her boyfriend, Martin Rodriguez, a 20-year-old Hispanic man.

The Austin Police Department (APD) received multiple calls reporting a shooting at the location. Witnesses stated that Rodriguez shot Davis before turning the gun on himself. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Davis unresponsive with a gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of emergency medical services, Davis was pronounced deceased.

During the investigation, it was revealed that Rodriguez had also sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Despite his injuries, he resisted arrest and engaged in a physical altercation with the officers. Eventually, he was apprehended and transported to a local hospital for treatment. Currently, Rodriguez is in stable condition.

Homicide detectives and crime scene specialists were called to the scene to gather evidence and investigate the incident. Through their diligent work, it was determined that Rodriguez had committed the act of first-degree murder by fatally shooting Davis. The motive behind the tragic event is yet to be determined.

It is worth noting that Rodriguez had a prior criminal record. He was arrested on December 1, 2023, for unlawfully carrying a weapon, which was his second offense, and he had a previous felony conviction in Travis County. Despite this, Rodriguez was granted a personal recognizance bond and released on December 15th.

Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding this case to come forward. The APD's Homicide unit can be reached at 512-974-TIPS or via email at homicide.apd@austintexas.gov. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program at austincrimestoppers.org or by calling 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 may be offered for any information that leads to an arrest.

This tragic incident marks Austin's first homicide of 2024. The community mourns the loss of Naomi Davis and stands united against domestic violence and senseless acts of violence.
