Central Texans are being urged to prepare for the upcoming severe weather season in the region. As the wildflowers bloom, signaling the arrival of spring, residents are reminded of the potential risks associated with severe weather, including thunderstorms, high winds, hail, tornadoes, and heavy rain that can lead to flash flooding.

Austin HSEM Director Ken Snipes emphasized the importance of having a plan in place to protect oneself and loved ones during severe weather events, stating, "Having a plan in place to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your property for each type of severe weather event is very important this time of year."

Jorge Morales, Watershed Protection Department Director, highlighted the importance of staying informed and following safety guidelines to protect individuals and communities from the risks of flooding, stating, "Flooding can happen anywhere it rains, putting everyone at risk."

In order to stay safe during severe weather events, the Austin Fire Department stressed the importance of following safety tips provided by city departments and avoiding crossing or going around barricades or road closures. The department reiterated the message, "Turn around, Don’t Drown!"

The City's Homeless Strategy Office has also taken steps to ensure the safety of vulnerable community members during flood events. Through a text message notification system and outreach efforts, the office provides crucial preparedness guidance to individuals experiencing homelessness, encouraging them to seek higher ground away from potential flood risk areas.

Residents are encouraged to make a plan, build an emergency supplies kit, and stay informed through resources available online at ReadyCentralTexas.org. Additionally, the Flood Early Warning System team monitors road conditions and closures, providing updates at ATXFloods.com and on social media.

As severe weather season approaches, Austin-Travis County EMS Medics advise residents to stay weather aware, check local forecasts, and avoid driving through flooded roadways. The Austin Police Department also emphasizes the importance of having a plan in place, staying informed, and checking on loved ones and neighbors during severe weather events.

The City of Austin urges all community members, regardless of housing status, to sign up for Warn Central Texas emergency notifications to stay informed and prepared for potential severe weather events.
