Susan Ashworth, a dedicated advocate for native plants and flowers, is making significant strides towards a Net-Zero Austin by promoting sustainable practices and creating a greener community. Susan's passion for native Texas landscaping and her efforts in encouraging the use of native plants have earned her the title of Net-Zero Hero.

Reflecting on her inspiration to take action, Susan shared, "Growing up on the South Plains, I realized how precious water is and I have always been mindful of my use. This also added to my conviction that a native Texas landscape was the way to go." Her journey began with a realization of her lack of knowledge in transforming her yard, leading her to seek guidance and expertise to create a thriving native habitat.

Embracing the role of a steward for native landscapes, Susan not only transforms her own surroundings but also endeavors to educate and inspire others. Describing her approach, Susan likened herself to the "Johnny Appleseed of wildflowers," spreading seeds and knowledge wherever she goes, including organizing native plantings in various community spaces.

When asked about the most rewarding aspect of her involvement, Susan expressed pride in being a pioneer in her neighborhood, stating, "I do think that my yard in Rollingwood was the first one to completely embrace the native look." Despite the challenges of manual labor and maintenance, Susan finds joy in the process, highlighting her newfound fascination with botany.

Sharing her favorite wildflowers and places to view them, Susan reminisced about the first bloom in her garden and emphasized the abundance of wildflowers along highways for all to enjoy. For those eager to learn more, Susan recommended exploring resources and following one's passion to contribute to a greener environment.
