Austin and Travis County area residents face heat, wildfire, and flash-flooding risks this summer. Austin’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) is hosting an Emergency Preparedness Pop-Up event at the Yarborough Branch Library on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, from 4-7 p.m. This event is part of a monthly series hosted by Austin HSEM in each City Council District throughout the year on the third Wednesday of each month.

“If you are paying attention to our neighbors in Houston you may be seeing the challenges they are facing – days until power can be restored, debris clean up, flood damage, gas shortages, and the toll disasters take on our mental health,” said Interim HSEM Director Bill Wilson. “Now is the time [to] ask yourself ‘if this happened to me would I be prepared?’ We host events like these to teach our community how to be resilient during disasters. Don’t wait to plan or get your home stocked with supplies.”

Representatives from HSEM along with other City departments and partners in emergency response will be on site to provide tips, information, and supplies. The first 25 guests will receive an emergency supply kit, with a limit of one per household.

For members of the Central Texas community, HSEM’s Emergency Preparedness Pop-Ups are an opportunity to learn about getting prepared before emergencies and stock up on free supplies. Basic Emergency Preparedness Kits come full of items that can value over $100 including a backpack, lanterns, glow sticks, personal cooling supplies, battery-powered chargers, NOAA weather radios, Neighborhood Preparedness Guides, and items for kids and pets. Given the wide spectrum of hazards in Central Texas, it is crucial for community members to be prepared and know what to do before, during, and after a disaster.

This Pop-Up event is part of a monthly series hosted by HSEM in each City Council District throughout the year. To learn more about how the four steps of emergency preparedness or upcoming Emergency Preparedness Pop-Ups visit ReadyCentralTexas.org.
