As spring arrives in Central Texas, the region faces its annual challenges with severe weather, including thunderstorms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, hail, and the ongoing threat of flash flooding. Residents are urged to prepare for these conditions to ensure their safety.
Jim Redick, Director of Austin’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, emphasizes the need for vigilance and readiness, stating, “Severe weather presents a variety of threats like hail, lightning, and tornadoes. Add in that Central Texas is the flash flood capital of the world, and springtime becomes a time of year when it is essential to ensure you are prepared for anything.”
Residents are advised to stay informed about weather conditions through local news outlets and official social media accounts associated with the City of Austin and its public safety departments. The National Weather Service provides weather watches and warnings that can be crucial for timely decision-making.
Key precautions include avoiding driving or walking through low water crossings as "12 inches of running water can move a vehicle and less than that can cause you to lose your footing. Turn around. Don’t drown.” It is crucial not to drive around barriers that indicate hazardous conditions during floods.
Emergency preparedness involves four essential steps according to the Austin Homeland Security & Emergency Management. These are:
- **Make a Plan:** Establish an emergency plan for your household that covers meeting locations, evacuation routes, and emergency contacts.
- **Build a Kit:** Assemble an emergency kit with necessities such as non-perishable food, water, flashlights, first-aid supplies, and medications, including those for pets.
- **Know Your Neighbors:** Developing relationships with neighbors can form a supportive network that enhances community resilience.
- **Stay Informed:** Ensure your cell phone is charged and have multiple means of receiving emergency alerts by signing up at WarnCentralTexas.org.
After a weather event or flood, residents should safely check properties for damage and cooperate with local authorities' guidance before returning home. It's important to document any damages for insurance claims and remain cautious about potential scams related to storm damage repairs.

Other specific recommendations include securing outdoor items that may become projectiles during severe weather, seeking shelter during storms, and knowing how to turn off utilities if necessary. In case of flooding, finding higher ground and ensuring valuable items are placed above potential flood levels is advised.
Austin Water also encourages residents to be prepared by familiarizing themselves with water shutoff valves. This preparation can reduce potential water damage during emergencies.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed and ready for any severe weather situation to protect themselves and their properties.
