Austin City Manager T.C. Broadnax has provided an update on the ongoing search for a new Chief of Police. Broadnax emphasized the importance of this position and noted that identifying a permanent police chief for Austin was a top priority upon his appointment as city manager in May.
"We worked diligently to find the best candidates possible and to provide our community members with the opportunity to tell us what qualities they wanted to see in a Chief of Police and provide their feedback as we narrowed the field," Broadnax stated. He added that he is currently reviewing feedback from community members, stakeholder interview panels, and the City Council.
Broadnax announced that he will not request a special called meeting for Tuesday, July 30, to ask the Mayor and Council to confirm a new police chief. "This position is too critical to our Police Department, the City organization as a whole, and this community to rush," he explained. Broadnax intends to take additional time to consider the two remaining candidates before making a final decision.
The search for Austin's new Chief of Police continues under careful consideration by city officials.
