Sammy Lam, known as "the Wine Cowboy," is making strides in the wine industry by prioritizing sustainability. As the founder of Wanderlust Wine Co., the world’s largest on-tap winery, Lam has been recognized for his innovative approach to reducing the carbon footprint associated with wine production and distribution.
Wanderlust Wine Co. was recently inducted into the Austin Green Business Leaders program at the Platinum Level, highlighting its commitment to sustainable practices. During a site visit to Wanderlust's East Austin location, Lam discussed his journey and dedication to environmental responsibility.
Lam's inspiration to enter the wine industry stemmed from a desire to connect with his late mother, Diana Cano, who had a passion for wine but lacked opportunities to explore it fully. His formal education began with a course called "The Geography of Wine" during his time with Semester at Sea, which fueled his interest in wine further.
After receiving a Master of Science in Wine Management from the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) and a Wine & Spirit Education Trust Diploma, Lam is now pursuing the Master of Wine title. This would make him the first Master of Wine from Texas if successful.
At Wanderlust Wine Co., Lam has implemented several sustainable practices such as using kegs instead of single-use glass bottles, sourcing wines made with organic grapes from sustainable vineyards, and developing alternative packaging solutions. These efforts have resulted in significant waste reduction and cost savings.
Lam emphasizes that sustainability is an ongoing process requiring continuous improvement and adaptation. He advises businesses to stay informed about emerging technologies and best practices while integrating sustainability into their core values.
The recognition from the Austin Green Business Leader Program signifies validation for Wanderlust's efforts and opens up new opportunities for collaboration with like-minded partners. For Lam, this acknowledgment also honors his family's legacy and their contributions to the business.
Despite challenges posed by the pandemic and navigating financial pressures, Lam remains committed to advancing sustainability within the wine industry. His advice to others is to find a passion that drives them towards making positive changes in their community and beyond.
Wanderlust Wine Co.'s journey reflects how combining passion with purpose can lead to significant environmental benefits while fostering community engagement.
