On Saturday, September 21, 2024, at approximately 12:08 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a welfare check call in the 2300 block of Brookhill Drive. Multiple callers expressed concern for a couple living in the house and reported that a subject named Kyler Monaghan was refusing to open the door.
Officers made contact with Chevy Kyler Monaghan, who informed them that his grandparents were inside and unharmed. After obtaining a key to access the residence, officers found Shari Mallory-Maxa and Anthony Maxa deceased in the hallway with apparent gunshot wounds.
Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Specialists processed the scene and interviewed witnesses. The investigation revealed that Mr. Monaghan had shot and killed his grandparents.
Mr. Monaghan has been charged with Capital Murder and booked into Travis County Jail.

A reward up to $1,000 may be available for information leading to an arrest.
This case is being investigated as Austin's 44th and 45th homicide of 2024.
