On January 18, 2025, at around 3:02 a.m., officers from the Austin Police Department responded to a shooting incident at the Citgo gas station located at 717 East 7th Street. Upon arrival, they found an unresponsive Black male in the front passenger seat of a black vehicle. The victim was identified as Chivalos Lockett. He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead at 3:24 a.m.

The suspect, Zion Singleton, who was also present at the scene, was detained by police. Homicide detectives and crime scene specialists were called to investigate and gather evidence. The investigation revealed that Singleton had been parked at the Citgo pumps for some time before Lockett entered the front passenger seat of his vehicle. After several seconds, Singleton exited the vehicle after allegedly shooting Lockett.

It has been reported that Singleton is a documented gang member and legally prohibited from possessing firearms. Despite this, he declined to provide any statement regarding the incident.

Singleton has been charged with First Degree Murder following his arrest.

Authorities urge anyone with additional information about this case to contact the Austin Police Department at 512-974-TIPS or anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program by visiting austincrimestoppers.org or calling 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 may be offered for information leading to an arrest.

This marks Austin's third homicide investigation of 2025.
