Austin's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) is set to host an Emergency Preparedness Pop-Up event at the Twin Oaks Branch Library on October 16, 2024, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. This initiative is part of a monthly series held in each City Council District throughout the year on the third Wednesday of every month.
The event aims to prepare the community by offering tips, information, and supplies for emergency situations. Representatives from HSEM, alongside other city departments and emergency response partners, will be present to assist attendees. The first 25 guests will receive an emergency supply kit with a limit of one per household.
These pop-up events provide Central Texas residents with an opportunity to learn about preparedness and obtain free supplies. The Basic Emergency Preparedness Kits include items valued over $100 such as backpacks, lanterns, glow sticks, personal cooling supplies, battery-powered chargers, NOAA weather radios, Neighborhood Preparedness Guides, and items for kids and pets.
"Considering the variety of hazards in this area, including flooding, wildfires, extreme heat, and winter storms," the press release states that "it is important for our community to know the essential steps before, during, and after emergencies."
