City of Austin Mayor Kirk Watson and Travis County Judge Andy Brown have issued a pre-emptive disaster declaration in response to the state's similar action, announced by Governor Greg Abbott. The decision comes amid severe wildfire risks due to prolonged dry conditions, with no measurable rain for over 40 days.

Mayor Watson highlighted the urgency of the situation: “Austin ranks sixth in the nation for number of homes at risk of wildfire,” he stated. “With that in mind, and taking into consideration the heightened risk we face due to dry conditions, I am hereby declaring The City of Austin to be in a state of disaster for wildfires."

This proactive measure is aimed at enabling public safety staff to track expenses and expedite reimbursement from federal or state resources if wildfires occur during this period. Such declarations are common practice for natural disasters like hurricanes, facilitating resource management and speeding up response efforts.

Bill Wilson, Interim Director of Austin’s Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management, emphasized preventive measures given the influx of visitors expected for upcoming sporting events. “Wildfires can spread very quickly,” Wilson noted. He urged caution as "more than 90% of wildfires are manmade."

Residents are encouraged to register for alerts via WarnCentralTexas.org and take steps to protect their homes. This includes having an emergency plan and kit ready, as well as downloading resources like the Ready, Set, Go! Personal Wildfire Action Guide.

In case of evacuation orders, residents should promptly follow instructions and check in at designated Temporary Assembly Points (TAPs) to ensure efficient rescue operations.
