On January 4, 2025, at around 3:50 a.m., the Austin Police Department (APD) responded to reports of a fire at a transient camp located in the green belt area near 1704 Nelms Drive. Upon arrival, officers and Austin Fire Department (AFD) firefighters found a tent engulfed in flames. Inside the burnt remains, they discovered the body of an unidentified male who was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:03 a.m.

Homicide detectives and crime scene specialists were called to process the scene and gather information from witnesses. The victim is described as either White or Hispanic, homeless, and possibly known by the nickname “JT.” The APD Homicide unit is seeking public assistance in identifying the victim and gathering information on potential suspects. An autopsy conducted on January 5 revealed that the victim suffered trauma to his body. His death was ruled a homicide caused by sharp force injuries. Investigators suspect that the fire was set to conceal the murder.

The APD encourages anyone with relevant information to contact them at 512-974-TIPS. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program by visiting austincrimestoppers.org or calling 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 may be offered for information leading to an arrest.

This incident marks Austin's first homicide investigation of 2025.
