Austin's Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (HSEM) is set to hold its next Emergency Preparedness Pop-Up event at the John Gillum (North Village) Branch Library. Scheduled for January 15, from 3 to 6 p.m., this initiative forms part of a monthly series aimed at enhancing public readiness for winter weather and other hazards. The events are organized across different City Council Districts on the third Wednesday each month.
During the pop-up, representatives from HSEM, alongside other city departments and emergency response partners, will offer advice, information, and supplies. Notably, the first 25 attendees will receive an emergency supply kit with a limit of one per household.
Central Texas faces various risks including winter storms, extreme heat, flooding, and wildfires. These pop-ups provide a chance for residents to learn about disaster preparedness and acquire free items that can aid in emergencies. The Basic Emergency Preparedness Kits distributed contain items valued over $100 such as backpacks, lanterns, glow sticks, battery-powered chargers, NOAA weather radios, Neighborhood Preparedness Guides, and essentials for children and pets.
For more details on emergency preparedness steps or future events in this series, individuals can visit HSEM’s digital preparedness hub at ReadyCentralTexas.org.
