Congressman Michael McCaul has been appointed as the vice chair of the House Homeland Security Committee for the 119th Congress. McCaul, a Republican from Texas and chairman emeritus of the committee, expressed his concerns about current border policies and emphasized the importance of addressing security issues.
McCaul stated, "The Biden-Harris administration’s disastrous open-border policies have wreaked havoc on our communities, cost thousands of young Americans’ lives, and left our nation vulnerable to rising terrorism. Thankfully, with Republicans in control of the House, Senate, and White House, this committee has a unique opportunity to help turn the tide." He also highlighted his experience as a former attorney tasked with securing the border and his previous role as chairman of the committee. He is looking forward to working with Chairman Green and the Trump administration.
Committee Chairman Mark E. Green, MD, a Republican from Tennessee, also commented on the organization of the committee for this session. Green stated that they are prepared to ensure that the Department of Homeland Security succeeds in its mission and fulfills its mandate. "It is an honor to return as chairman," he said. He emphasized his commitment to finding bipartisan solutions alongside Ranking Member Thompson.
Green welcomed new members Representatives Ogles, Biggs, Evans, Mackenzie, and Knott to the committee roster. He noted their valuable insight and experience would be beneficial to their work.
The committee plans to focus on securing borders, combating terrorism within U.S. soil, bolstering cyber defenses, promoting maritime security, ensuring community resiliency while restoring government accountability. Green stressed these missions' importance in light of recent crises attributed to current administration policies.
