On February 21, 2025, at approximately 11:15 p.m., a traffic incident occurred at the intersection of S. IH-35 SVRD NB and E. Ben White Blvd. in Austin. The crash involved three vehicles. The driver of the first vehicle left the scene, while Yoania Fernandez, identified as the driver of the second vehicle, was taken to a local hospital with severe injuries. She succumbed to her injuries on February 25, 2025.
The driver of the third vehicle stayed at the scene and is cooperating with authorities in their investigation. This accident marks Austin's eighth fatal crash of 2025, resulting in eight deaths so far this year. Comparatively, on this date last year, there were ten fatal crashes leading to ten fatalities.
"The statements are from the initial assessment of the fatal crash," an APD representative stated, emphasizing that "the investigation is still pending" and "fatality information may change."
