On February 27, the Austin City Council approved amendments to short-term rental regulations in Austin. These changes are designed to align with state regulatory updates and advancements in technology.

The amendments will take effect on October 1, 2025. Additionally, the council passed an ordinance mandating that short-term rental platforms collect Hotel Occupancy Tax on behalf of their users, effective April 1, 2025.

Further discussions on proposed changes to short-term rental regulations will continue this summer after the conclusion of the 89th Texas Legislative Session.

Updates regarding these changes will be available on the City’s Short-Term Rental webpage as the Development Services Department works on implementation. For details on proposed modifications to the City’s Land Development Code, visit austintexas.gov/LDC.
