On Monday, May 22, 2023, at approximately 9:05 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a shooting at a Dairy Queen in the 9300 block of IH 35 SB. The caller stated he shot a man dating his child's mother, Efrain Jaimes, after Jaimes attacked him. Officers at the scene located the caller, who cooperated with the investigation. Although officers did not find a person shot on the scene, a second 911 call reported Jaimes had been taken to a local hospital with a gunshot wound. Jaimes died at the hospital.
Investigators determined that Jaimes attacked a man known to him, and the man shot Jaimes in self-defense. The case has been turned over to the Travis County District Attorney's office, and no charges will be filed at this time.
