The Austin Police Department (APD) responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting a man damaging walls and attempting to ignite an apartment on fire in the 1700 block of Burton Drive on Friday, July 26, 2024, at 3:56 p.m. Upon arrival, officers detected a burnt smell and found singed paper within the residence. A witness confirmed that the suspect had intentionally started a fire inside the apartment. APD officers detained the suspect and alerted the Austin Fire Department (AFD) Arson Division.

AFD investigators arrived on the scene and noted an increasing burning odor in the apartment. They began removing sections of damaged drywall to ensure there were no remaining smoldering areas. During this search, investigators discovered charred toilet paper inside one of the walls. The physical evidence and witness statements led to the arrest of Carlos Humberto Herrera-Anariba for arson of habitation.

Herrera-Anariba was subsequently booked into Travis County Jail with his bond set at $15,000.

No injuries were reported as a result of this incident; however, the building sustained approximately $500 in damages.
