On Monday, August 26, 2024, at approximately 2:08 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a shooting call at the Waterloo Flats apartment complex located at 1300 South Pleasant Valley Road. The caller, later identified as an employee of the apartment complex, informed dispatch that someone had run up to him and began attacking him. Upon arrival, officers found a male, later identified as Adrian Lopez, on the ground in the parking lot with an apparent gunshot wound. Lopez was pronounced deceased at 2:42 p.m.

Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Specialists processed the scene and interviewed witnesses. The investigation revealed that Lopez had randomly begun assaulting the employee and further threatened him with pepper spray, which led the employee to shoot his attacker.

"This case was staffed with the Travis County district attorney’s office and no charges are being filed at this time though the case is still under investigation," according to authorities.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Austin Police Department at 512-974-TIPS. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program by visiting austincrimestoppers.org or calling 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 may be available for information leading to an arrest.

This case is being investigated as Austin's 42nd homicide of 2024.
