The City of Austin Housing Department has announced the opening of the Bungalows at Century Park, a new housing community located at 13311 Burnet Rd., on the city's north side in District 7. This initiative aims to provide permanent supportive housing (PSH) for single adults experiencing chronic homelessness and disabilities in Travis County. The facility will add to the city’s growing inventory of PSH units.
Mandy DeMayo, Interim Director of the Housing Department, stated, "We are happy that more permanent supportive units are coming online and that these units will be supporting people with disabilities. The addition of these new residences shows the City’s continued commitment to addressing homelessness while meeting the needs of marginalized groups."
The site was formerly known as Texas Bungalows Hotel and Suites, which was acquired by the city in 2021 for conversion into PSH. Renovations included foundation repair, roof and exterior work, flood damage rectification, and service space accommodations.
The Bungalows at Century Park offers 60 fully furnished studio apartments designed for single occupancy. Amenities include round-the-clock property management, a laundry facility, food pantry, common areas, security features, and dedicated offices for social services delivery. Onsite support will focus on helping tenants manage chronic behavioral health conditions through various services like case management and counseling.
Jeff Richardson, CEO of Integral Care, highlighted the importance of stable housing for mental health recovery: "Bungalows is a unique type of permanent supportive housing. In this evidence-based model individuals move immediately without pre-condition from the streets or shelters into housing," he said. "Once housed they are offered rehabilitation services and recovery supports to help them regain their health and stability."
This project is a collaboration between the City of Austin and Integral Care; while Braun & Butler Construction Inc. served as contractors. Funding came from several sources including $6.5 million for acquisition—$4.6 million from 2018 General Obligation Bonds and $1.9 million from American Rescue Plan Act funds—and $4.084 million allocated for renovations.
The Austin Housing Finance Corporation awarded 50 local housing project-based vouchers with an additional 10 tenant-based vouchers provided by the Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA). Renovations commenced in March 2024 with tenant move-ins expected by November 2024.
The broader initiative aims to increase available PSH units citywide to over 400 this year and approximately 1,200 by 2027 as part of efforts to reduce homelessness in Austin.
For further assistance related to homelessness or Integral Care services contact information is available through Austin ECHO or Integral Care's helpline respectively.
