The City of Austin has announced the activation of its Cold Weather Shelters on Sunday, February 16, 2025, in response to forecasts predicting overnight temperatures to fall into the 30s. Registration for those seeking shelter will take place between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at One Texas Center, located at 505 Barton Springs Road.
The city collaborates with community partners to provide direct text information to individuals registered with its text alert system. The Homeless Strategy Office decides when to activate these shelters up to one day in advance, ensuring they open when temperatures at Camp Mabry are expected to drop to 35 degrees or below.
For access, individuals must register during the specified time at One Texas Center. CapMetro is working with the city to offer transportation from this location to various shelters, and no fare will be charged for those unable to pay. An after-hours embarkation service is also available for those needing transport outside of registration hours.
While primarily serving the homeless population, these shelters are open to anyone needing a warm place overnight. Further details can be obtained by calling the Cold Weather Shelter Hotline at 512-972-5055.
To manage capacity and privacy concerns, specific shelter locations are not disclosed; however, information about accessing services is shared publicly. Residents are advised to stay informed via AustinTexas.gov/Alerts for updates available in multiple languages.
Given forecasts indicating potential hard freezes on Wednesday and Thursday mornings (February 19 and 20), city officials will continue monitoring weather conditions closely for possible further activations next week.
