On Sunday, May 7, 2023, at 7:12 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a crash between an SUV and a motorcycle in the 500 block of E. Slaughter Lane. Benjamin Garcia, the motorcyclist, was taken to a local hospital, where he died a short time later. The driver of the vehicle was not injured and is cooperating with the investigation.
On Monday, May 15, 2023, at approximately 2:49 a.m., the Austin Police Department (APD) received a call regarding a shooting in the 7700 block of Springfield Drive. The caller reported a man was shot inside a vehicle. Officers at the scene found the driver of the vehicle, Brian Serrano, with apparent gunshot wounds. Serrano died on the scene. A woman who was a passenger in the vehicle had minor injuries from debris during the shooting.
U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) on May 15 released the following statement on Special Counsel John Durham’s report denouncing the FBI and DOJ's flawed investigation into former President Trump's alleged collusion with Russia. On May 15, U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) introduced the Fentanyl Eradication and Narcotics Deterrence (FEND) Off Fentanyl Act, along with Representative Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-Ohio), who serves as an original cosponsor. The FEND Off Fentanyl Act is a sanctions and anti-money laundering bill aimed at combating the country’s fentanyl crisis by targeting the illicit fentanyl supply chain, from the chemical suppliers in China to the cartels that traffic the drugs in from Mexico.
Today, Austin City Council authorized two engineering services contracts for the Southwest Parkway Transmission Main & Elevated Reservoir project and the South I-35 Elevated Reservoir project. These new water storage projects, which are part of Austin Water’s Strategic Long-Range Water System Plan, have been advanced in line with recommendations made by the University of Texas Center for Water and the Environment to develop additional pathways for water distribution to reach South, Southwest and Southeast Austin customers. Southwest Austin was hardest hit during Winter Storm Uri because of the distance from centralized sources of water supply. The new reservoirs will enable greater storage capacity in Austin Water’s service area during extreme weather events.

The City of Austin, in partnership with Austin Young Chamber, announced the winners of the annual [RE]Verse Pitch Competition. The program aims to reduce waste in Austin through innovation and design. The winners, known as Innovation Fellows, developed circular business ideas using byproduct materials from other businesses. The Innovation Fellows will receive prizes valued up to $4,800. The prize package includes a stipend for completing the three-part Innovation Accelerator program.
