On Sunday, May 7, 2023, at 7:12 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a crash between an SUV and a motorcycle in the 500 block of E. Slaughter Lane. Benjamin Garcia, the motorcyclist, was taken to a local hospital, where he died a short time later. The driver of the vehicle was not injured and is cooperating with the investigation.
This incident is being investigated as Austin's 34th fatal crash of 2023, resulting in 34 fatalities for the year. On the date of this crash in 2022, 37 fatal crashes resulted in 38 deaths.
