On Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at approximately 12:52 a.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to reports of a crash in the 10700 block of Burnet Road. Preliminary investigation revealed that a suspect vehicle was traveling southbound when it struck a victim. The driver of the suspect vehicle did not stop and left the area.

On Tuesday, August 20, 2024, the Austin Police Department (APD) was alerted to a credible threat at Graham Elementary School in northeast Austin. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) received a tip regarding an Instagram user making concerning statements online. APD investigated the case alongside the FBI, Austin Independent School District Police (AISD PD), and the Travis County District Attorney’s office. The Instagram user, identified as 17-year-old Giana Castillo, was charged with a 3rd Degree Felony Terroristic Threat and taken into custody (APD Case #24-2331338)....

Transformer failure causes power outage for thousands in Southwest Austin

At 8:20 p.m. Thursday, a transformer at a Southwest Austin substation went offline, resulting in a power outage for 6,400 customers. Crews responded immediately and rerouted power to other equipment, restoring power to all affected customers temporarily.

One driver, later identified as Pedro Arroyo, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased on August 17, 2024. The occupants of a second vehicle were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The occupants of the remaining three vehicles were not injured.

U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) released a statement regarding the announcement that the U.S. Department of Commerce and Texas Instruments have signed a non-binding preliminary memorandum of terms for up to $1.6 billion in direct funding through McCaul’s CHIPS for America Act. The funds will be matched with more than $18 billion in private investment from Texas Instruments, much of which will go toward expanding its semiconductor manufacturing operations in Sherman, Texas.
