The Austin Police Department (APD) is currently investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place on December 5, 2023, in the 5300 block of Austral Loop. The incident occurred when officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress at a residence in the area.

According to the APD, the initial responding officer arrived at the scene and encountered the suspect, later identified as Shane James, in the backyard of the residence. Without hesitation, James fired several gunshots at the officer, who returned fire in self-defense. Unfortunately, the officer sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the exchange.

In the face of danger, the injured officer managed to move to the front of the house, where he found another officer who provided cover. Miraculously, it was later determined that the suspect was not struck by gunfire during the incident. Both officers displayed immense bravery and composure in a highly volatile situation.

Medical assistance was immediately called for the injured officer, and he was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Fortunately, he has since been treated and released to recover at home. Meanwhile, James fled the scene in a vehicle he had stolen from the residence.

A pursuit ensued, and at approximately 7:14 p.m., James crashed the stolen vehicle at the intersection of SH 45 and FM 1826. He was subsequently taken into custody. During his arrest, James was found to be in possession of a firearm, further escalating the severity of the situation.

Tragically, upon entering the residence, officers discovered the bodies of Catherine Short and Lauren Short, who had suffered fatal injuries. Both victims were pronounced deceased at the scene. The events leading up to this incident, as well as the incident itself, are currently under investigation by the APD Homicide Unit.

James has been transported to the Travis County Jail and is facing charges of two counts of Capital Murder and one count of Aggravated Assault against a Public Servant. The seriousness of these charges reflects the gravity of the situation and the loss of innocent lives.

In accordance with APD policy, the officer-involved shooting incident was captured on the officer's body-worn camera. The APD has announced that the video footage will be released within ten business days, adhering to established protocols.

The officer who discharged his firearm has been with the APD for over twelve years and has been placed on administrative duty, as is customary in such cases. The APD will conduct two concurrent investigations into the incident: a criminal investigation led by the APD Special Investigations Unit in collaboration with the Travis County District Attorney's Office, and an administrative investigation conducted by the APD Internal Affairs Unit, with oversight from the Office of Police Oversight.

The APD is urging anyone with information related to this incident to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigations. Individuals can contact the APD's Special Investigations Unit at (512) 974-6840 or provide anonymous tips through Capitol Area Crime Stoppers at 512-472-8477. Tips can also be submitted online at austincrimestoppers.org.

As the investigation unfolds, the APD remains committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring accountability. The loss of life is always tragic, and the department will do everything in its power to bring justice to the victims and their families.
