The City of Austin has been recognized by the National Digital Inclusion Alliance (NDIA) as a Digital Inclusion Trailblazer for its efforts to bridge the digital divide. This marks the third consecutive year that Austin has received this prestigious award.

Digital inclusion, defined as access to affordable high-speed internet, devices, and digital skills training, has become increasingly crucial in today's world, as the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted. The City of Austin understands the ongoing needs of its community and has continued its digital inclusion initiatives beyond the quarantine period.

Rondella Hawkins, the City of Austin's Telecommunications and Regulatory Affairs Officer, expressed her pride in the recognition and gratitude towards the city's team, city management, elected officials, and community partners for their unwavering support. Hawkins stated, "Providing opportunity is essential to a thriving community!"

Austin joins a record number of 47 Digital Inclusion Trailblazers this year, representing municipal, county, and regional governments across the United States. These Trailblazers serve as models for other local governments to follow in building digitally inclusive communities.

Angela Siefer, the executive director of NDIA, emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving digital equity. She stated, "Nonprofits, libraries, churches, and other community organizations can't reach digital equity on their own. For everyone to thrive in today's digital world, we need all hands on deck."

The City of Austin attained Trailblazer status by prioritizing digital inclusion for its residents through various initiatives. These include providing grants for technology opportunities to non-profit organizations working towards digital equity, implementing the Community PC Program, which refurbishes and provides devices to the community, and offering digital literacy training programs in partnership with Austin Free-Net.

NDIA recently updated its Trailblazer program, identifying seven categories of current best practices. Applicants undergo a verification process to assess their accuracy and community impact. The materials of successful applicants are then shared on NDIA's website, serving as a valuable resource for other communities seeking to develop their digital inclusion solutions.

The City of Austin's Financial Services Department, specifically the Telecommunications and Regulatory Affairs division, plays a vital role in advocating for the welfare of citizens. They ensure fair compensation for the private use of public right-of-way, bring internet access and computer technology to all members of the community through digital inclusion programs, and protect consumers from unfair practices.

The NDIA, with the support of over 1,500 digital inclusion practitioners, works towards advancing digital equity by supporting community programs and equipping policymakers to take action. Their focus is on advocating for equitable broadband access, tech devices, digital skills training, and tech support.

Austin's recognition as a Digital Inclusion Trailblazer highlights the city's commitment to creating a digitally inclusive environment for all its residents. By prioritizing digital equity and implementing innovative programs, Austin sets an example for other communities striving to bridge the digital divide.
