City staff in Austin have proposed code amendments aimed at increasing housing options and supporting the Project Connect light rail investments. Planning Department Director Lauren Middleton-Pratt stated, "These changes will create more opportunities to make housing more attainable for Austin residents along our transit lines and throughout the city."
Annick Beaudet, director of the City’s Project Connect Office, emphasized the importance of the proposed amendments in addressing housing and mobility challenges. Beaudet highlighted that the changes will support the goal of providing infrastructure for various modes of transportation and improving Austin’s competitiveness in securing federal funding for the light rail system.
The proposed amendments include prohibiting certain uses in the vicinity of the Project Connect Light Rail corridor to support the transit line and promote a safe pedestrian environment. Beaudet mentioned that the changes will enhance Austin's overall mobility and competitiveness.
City residents will have the opportunity to learn more about the proposed changes at two open houses in April. Spanish interpretation will be available during the events, and language interpreters for other languages can be requested by calling 3-1-1 at least five days before the meeting.
The City Council is expected to vote on the code amendments in May after community feedback and input have been gathered. The City's efforts in coordinating land use policies with Project Connect partners have been praised for the opportunities they represent in improving transportation infrastructure and housing accessibility in Austin.
