The Lost and Found operation at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is a complex system managed by various entities. TSA handles items lost at security checkpoints, airlines manage those left on planes, and the airport itself takes care of anything left in the terminal and on AUS property. Passengers can report missing items by calling 512-530-LOST or using the software solution Chargerback.
Non-perishable items are kept for 60 days, while perishable items are discarded immediately. The most commonly lost items at AUS are water bottles, but other frequently misplaced belongings include coats during winter holidays and gifts after events in Austin.
Deon Ivy, Terminal Operations Officer, highlighted that managing Lost and Found is challenging due to the randomness of lost items. Special events and holidays increase passenger traffic and subsequently the volume of lost belongings.
One notable reunion involved a stuffed animal left in a parking garage. The story went viral on social media, leading to its return to the young owner. Another unique find was a pageant crown encased in glass, forgotten in the food court.
Deon’s team starts their day by checking voicemails from passengers and managing new item reports through their software. They process incoming items, search for owners using various methods including social media, handle in-person inquiries, and ensure efficient operations throughout the week from 8:00 AM to 4 PM.
For Deon, the best part of his job is solving mysteries related to lost items. The satisfaction comes from alleviating someone’s stress when an item is successfully returned.
