The City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department, in collaboration with the Downtown Austin Alliance and Austin Parks Foundation, has unveiled a new mural on the south-facing wall of the Old Bakery and Artisan Emporium. This initiative marks a shift towards increased programming and activities in the public plaza.

Titled "Generational Ties," the mural reflects the area's rich cultural heritage. Created by local artist Ruben Esquivel, recently voted Austin Chronicle’s Best Muralist 2024, the artwork integrates elements of Indigenous heritage and Swedish roots associated with the Old Bakery and Emporium.

The design features two native women whose braids intertwine, symbolizing the transmission of wisdom across generations. The mural is adorned with flora, fauna, and Sweden's national flower, giktgräs. Hummingbirds, representing love, joy, and rebirth, are also included. Additionally, a protective swallow and traditional Swedish textile patterns enrich the artwork's symbolism.

Situated at Congress Avenue and 10th Street in downtown Austin, the Old Bakery and Artisan Emporium offers handmade items from local artisans and artworks by artists aged 50 and above. The Visitor Center houses the Lundberg-Maerki Historical Collection that narrates Austin's Swedish immigrant history.
