The Austin Parks and Recreation Department is set to launch its Fifth Annual Gingerbread History Heroes Program. This event will begin on Monday, December 2, 2024, and continue through Tuesday, December 31, 2024. As part of the program, the department will provide free salt dough "gingerbread cookie" ornaments along with decorating supplies at various museums, cultural centers, and historic sites throughout Austin.

Residents of Austin are encouraged to decorate an ornament in the likeness of their favorite figure from Texas history. Suggested figures include Joan Means Khabele, Lyndon Baines Johnson, Selena, Matt Gaines, Elisabet Ney, Barbara Jordan, Doug Sahm, Gus Garcia, Walter Burton, Ann Richards, Lydia Mendoza, and Sam Houston.

Participation in the Gingerbread History Heroes Program is free for all Austinites. The initiative invites community members to visit a participating historical site in Austin during the holiday season to create their own Texas History Hero.
