The City of Austin Economic Development Department is encouraging residents to participate in Small Business Saturday on November 30. This annual event aims to boost the local economy, support entrepreneurs, and promote a sustainable community.

"Small Business Saturday is more than a day. It is an opportunity for Austinites to invest in what makes our city unique—our diverse and creative small businesses," said Sylnovia Holt-Rabb, Director of the Economic Development Department. "By shopping locally, Austinites not only support entrepreneurs and sustain local jobs but also help build a thriving community."

Small businesses contribute significantly to economic growth and job creation nationwide. In 2023, U.S. consumers spent approximately $17 billion at small businesses during Small Business Saturday, according to American Express®. Since its start in 2010, total reported spending has reached $201 billion.

Austin's economic and cultural districts offer various shopping, dining, and service experiences that reflect the city's unique culture. The Economic Development Department supports these districts through initiatives aimed at enhancing economic vitality.

The department provides robust support for small businesses through its Small Business Division. Entrepreneurs can access business coaching, educational classes, and resources designed to aid their success. Recent initiatives approved by the Austin City Council aim to foster business expansion opportunities while enhancing community engagement and cultural preservation.

Small Business Saturday takes place annually after Black Friday and marks the beginning of the holiday shopping season for many local businesses. Founded by American Express® in 2010 and co-sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration since 2011, it encourages shoppers to explore their communities' unique offerings.
