The City of Austin Economic Development Department has announced the signing of a Sister Cities Agreement with Limerick, Ireland. The agreement was formalized during a ceremony on December 5, attended by Austin Mayor Kirk Watson and Limerick Mayor John Moran. This partnership aims to enhance collaboration in education, culture, business, and innovation between the two cities. The event also marked the unveiling of the Limerick Sister City sign outside Austin City Hall.
Mayor Kirk Watson stated, “This Sister Cities Agreement with Limerick represents a new chapter in Austin’s global outreach. Together, we will create opportunities for cultural exchange, economic collaboration, and shared innovation that will benefit both our communities and foster a lasting friendship across the Atlantic.”
The agreement sets forth commitments to collaborate in business development, science and technology, creative economy, education, tourism, and urban development. It also includes plans for annual meetings to facilitate direct communication between the cities.
Mayor John Moran expressed his enthusiasm: “We are delighted to formalize our partnership with Austin, a city just like ours renowned for its entrepreneurial spirit and creative energy.” He added that this agreement is an opportunity to deepen connections and foster mutual growth.
This partnership supports the City of Austin Economic Development Department’s strategic goal of fostering global partnerships. With this agreement, Austin now has 13 Sister Cities and 2 Friendship Cities. The relationships are managed by Austin Sister Cities International (ASCI), which consists of community volunteers overseeing various committees.
