On December 12, the Austin City Council approved Austin Energy's Resource, Generation and Climate Protection Plan to 2035. This plan outlines a path towards a clean energy future, emphasizing reliability, affordability, environmental sustainability, and energy equity.

Bob Kahn, General Manager of Austin Energy, expressed gratitude towards the council and community partners for their contributions. "We are extremely grateful to Austin City Council and our many community partners and industry experts who played a vital role in shaping Austin Energy’s future," he said. Kahn also highlighted the plan's flexibility in addressing future challenges while aligning with community priorities.

The plan was developed under the direction of the city council with input from 40 organizations and experts. It aims to tackle immediate risks such as increased electricity demand, potential reliability issues due to insufficient local generation, limited transmission capacity, and extreme weather events.

Mayor Kirk Watson emphasized the importance of transitioning away from coal power. “A big part of this plan is readying ourselves to get out of Fayette Power Project,” he stated. The mayor stressed the need for replacement power sources to avoid energy shortfalls.

Lisa Martin, Deputy General Manager and Chief Operations Officer at Austin Energy, praised the council's efforts. "I’m incredibly proud of this Council and the Austin Energy team for building one of the strongest, most environmentally responsible plans in the country – carbon-free by 2035," she said.

Further details about the plan can be found at publicinput.com/generation.
