Carlos Sotelo dies after attempted robbery shooting in Austin

On Friday, December 13, 2024, the Austin Police Department (APD) responded to a shooting incident at Saint David’s North Austin Medical Center. The call was made by a security guard who reported that a male victim arrived at the hospital with a gunshot wound. The victim was later identified as Carlos Sotelo.

Officers identified the driver of the vehicle that brought Mr. Sotelo to the hospital as a witness to the incident. Mr. Sotelo succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on Saturday, December 14, at 10:28 a.m.

Homicide detectives and crime scene specialists were dispatched to investigate further. Their findings revealed that Mr. Sotelo and others were in their vehicle in the parking garage of Griffis Apartments when they were approached by multiple suspects attempting an armed robbery. As they tried to escape, shots were fired into their vehicle, hitting Mr. Sotelo.

The APD urges anyone with information regarding this case to contact them at 512-974-TIPS or submit tips anonymously via the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program at austincrimestoppers.org or by calling 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 is offered for information leading to an arrest.

This incident marks Austin's 68th homicide of the year 2024.
