The City of Austin, in collaboration with the Austin Fire Department and Austin-Travis County EMS, marked the grand re-opening of Fire Station #22 / EMS Station #12 on East Riverside Drive. This event is part of a broader initiative to enhance public safety infrastructure amid the city's rapid expansion.
The new 10,600 square foot facility includes a three-vehicle apparatus bay and a fitness room for first responders. It meets U.S. Green Building Council LEED Silver standards, integrating technology and nature. The site also features artwork by local artist Kevin Muñoz as part of the Art in Public Places Program.
Mayor Kirk Watson emphasized the importance of modernizing public safety facilities: “It’s an honor to be here as we celebrate the renovation of these critical public safety stations, which are a cornerstone of our growing city. One of my top priorities is ensuring that every Austin resident has swift and reliable access to emergency services, no matter where they live."
Austin Fire Chief Joel G. Baker highlighted the station's role in improving response times: “This renovated station represents a crucial step toward improving service in high-growth areas with low response times."
ATCEMS Chief Robert Luckritz spoke about equity in emergency services: “This station is not just a building; it’s a commitment to ensuring that all Austinites, regardless of where they live, receive the emergency services they need."
Eric Bailey from Capital Delivery Services noted their ongoing efforts: “While we continue building new stations to serve growing areas, we remain committed to revitalizing the original stations that have long anchored our communities."
