U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul, a Republican from Texas and chairman emeritus of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has issued a statement regarding the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In his statement, McCaul expressed strong condemnation alongside Secretary Rubio and the Trump administration against the M23 Rebels' assault on Goma and its impact on the Congolese people. He attributed part of the escalation to what he described as "the Biden administration's failure to uphold the Luanda Process." This situation has led to a humanitarian crisis with millions displaced and poses a risk of wider regional conflict.
McCaul emphasized that "all parties must immediately come to the table and act to put an end to the fighting." He also stressed that while supporting Congolese demands for M23 to cease its military actions, violence from all sides should be avoided. Specifically, he mentioned that "attacks on our U.S. embassy and its personnel will not be tolerated."
