Distractions are a leading cause in one out of six serious traffic crashes in Austin, often linked to phone use while driving. The issue is highlighted during April, which is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, as a reminder of the dangers involved. Authorities emphasize the importance of keeping phones out of reach while driving to prevent accidents.

"Putting your phone in park while your vehicle is in drive is an easy way to save a life," a spokesperson said, recommending the activation of the "do not disturb" feature on phones before starting a journey. This simple action is suggested to help drivers, passengers, and others reach their destinations safely.

Vision Zero, a community initiative in Austin, aims to eliminate traffic-related deaths and injuries by implementing street improvements, policy changes, and enforcement, along with educational efforts. To learn more about Vision Zero, residents are encouraged to visit the project's website.

"Activate 'do not disturb' before getting behind the wheel so you, your passengers and others can arrive safely!" the spokesperson urges, providing steps on how to activate the feature: opening the phone's settings, locating "do not disturb," and activating it before driving.
